U.S. retirement assets were down by a quarter last year

U.S. retirement assets fell $2.4 trillion, or 25%, to $7.86 trillion in 2008, according to a report released Wednesday by Spectrem Group. The drop-off in both traditional defined-benefit pensions and defined-contribution plans was attributed to 40% declines in domestic and global equity markets.
