Why your bike doesn't have a battery

The electric-bike business ought to be booming, but there's little sign of American commuters rushing to embrace the ultimate clean-transport device, writes Alan Durning. That's partly because the U.S. lacks a European or Asian-style bike culture, he notes, but it's also a result of a lack of suitable business infrastructure. For all their virtues, Durning writes, e-bikes are less reliable than regular bikes, and until a suitable network of repair shops is in place, few consumers are likely to make the jump.
