App-based ads and battery life

Third-party advertising on free applications account for heavy battery drainage on mobile devices, according to research from Purdue University. In one case, playing the "Angry Birds" app took up 20% of a device's energy while 45% of the remaining energy went to finding the device's location for geo-targeted advertising.
