Veterinary specialists have substantially increased

Veterinarians are increasingly certified in specialty areas, including cardiology, dermatology, oncology and ophthalmology, according to the AVMA, which reported 3,205 specialty-trained veterinarians in the U.S. in 1987, compared with 10,210 specialists in 2010. Veterinarians undergo between two and six years of additional training after veterinary school to become a certified specialist, said AVMA spokesman David Kirkpatrick.
