California starts cord blood collection program

The University of California, Davis, has launched a comprehensive public umbilical cord blood collection program to advance research and serve patients who need stem cell transplants. The program was authorized in 2010 and is funded by a temporary $2 birth certificate copying fee. Donations collected at the UC Davis Medical Center will be screened by the San Diego Blood Bank.
