Clinical model for blood clot patients cuts hospital use and costs

Using a clinical pathway for venous thromboembolism patients that includes order sets, systemwide education, follow-up phone calls and coordinated post-discharge care may help cut hospital stays and costs, according to the Journal of Hospital Medicine. Hospital stays decreased from 4.4 days to 3.1 days and readmission rates dropped from 9.4% to 5.8% for VTE pathway patients compared with historical patient data.
