Study questions use of age-based criteria for CRC screening

Data from 399,067 Veterans Affairs patients showed that using age-based criteria for colorectal cancer screening led to overuse of testing in unhealthy patients 75 years old or younger and underuse in healthy patients who are over age 75, University of Michigan researchers said. "If quality measures focused on age and health status, rather than age alone, we'd have better outcomes," said UM's Dr. Sameer Saini. The findings appear in the journal BMJ.
