Paying a premium for fair trade

Currently 35,000 retailers and restaurants in the U.S. sell fair trade products, an increase of 10% in the past 3 years, but the higher sums paid by consumers for the expensive fair trade label do not necessarily go to support farmers, say some analysts. Transfair USA, which controls fair trade labeling here, says $67 million has gone to fair trade farmers since 1999.
