Don't pay to bolster your local-search results

Small businesses shouldn't open their wallets for every local search engine or directory that comes along, writes Vedran Tomic. It's usually possible to improve your profile simply by tweaking your site, taking advantage of free tools and selectively paying to upgrade your profile. "The rule of thumb here is -- if they solicit you, they are not that good," Tomic warns.
