Triage nurse initiation of oral corticosteroids prior to physician assessment improved the quality and efficiency of care received by children with asthma in the emergency department, Canadian researchers reported in the journal Pediatrics. The study also found that nurse-initiated steroid treatment reduced the risk of hospital admission.
