House, Senate pass stopgap bill to head off U.S. shutdown

A shutdown of the federal government next week has likely been avoided, after the House of Representatives voted this morning in favor of a short-term funding measure. The bill was approved by the Senate on Wednesday, and went back to the House for final approval. The bill would keep federal agencies and programs funded through the end of the fiscal year.
