Medication in new stent helps maintain flow, prevent amputation

A new device combines the benefits of a stent and drug therapy to treat blood flow blockages in the thigh and help prevent amputation. The Zilver PTX stent, developed by Cook Medical, uses a time-release drug to prevent stents in the superficial femoral artery from becoming blocked again. "This is one more tool in our amputation-prevention tool box," said cardiologist Dr. Fadi Saab.
