High sodium intake may speed up cellular aging among obese teens

Consumption of an average of more than 4,100 milligrams of sodium each day was associated with shorter telomeres among overweight and obese 14- to 18-year-olds, according to a study presented at an American Heart Association meeting. However, researchers found that high sodium intake was not linked to increased telomere shortening in normal-weight teens. The findings suggest that "high [salt] intake and obesity may act synergistically to accelerate cellular aging," lead author Dr. Haidong Zhu said.
