New veggie hybrid celebrates the marriage of kale and sprouts

BrusselKale, a hybrid of Brussels sprouts and Russian Red kale developed by U.K.-based Tozer Seeds in 2010, is starting to show up on U.S. supermarket shelves in limited quantities. The vegetable, also called kale sprouts, flower sprouts and lollipop kale, is being touted as the next new hot superfood, said PMA Chief Science Officer Bob Whitaker, who called it "the most distinctive one we’ve seen since broccolini launched in 1999." BrusselKale was recognized last year, coming in third for the Fruit Logistica Innovations Award for outstanding innovation in the international fresh produce sector.
