Type 2 diabetes rates soar as childhood obesity rises

While Type 2 diabetes was extremely rare in children only a decade ago, the rise in childhood obesity has caused the diabetes rate to soar, says the author of a new book called "Diabesity." Author Francine Kaufman, a pediatric endocrinologist, says 18 million Americans have Type 2 diabetes and 41 million are pre-diabetic, but the trend could be thwarted with actions such as getting soft drinks and unhealthy snacks out of school vending machines and encouraging active lifestyles.
