Why top teachers are overlooked in the education debate

Many educators say the debate over effective teaching often focuses on improving failing teachers but does not mention the best educators, including National Board Certified Teachers. "Part of the culture of the profession is that it's egalitarian -- 'We're all the same, don't treat anyone differently' -- and we've seen teachers who are afraid to stand out, who have gone through National Board certification almost secretly," said Joseph A. Aguerrebere, CEO of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. He said top teachers also become frustrated when they lack the chance to use their skills.
