Medicare may spend more on discount drug plans, pharmacists say

Medicare's costs may be higher with preferred-pharmacy plans that promise lower prices, the National Community Pharmacists Association said. Insurers pass the burden of discounts to the federal government while Medicare patients get lower co-payments, according to the independent drugstore lobby's analysis. Insurer UnitedHealth said its preferred-pharmacy plan meets federal rules and cuts costs for beneficiaries and the government.
