Privatization in Ore. spurs debate on wholesale "sales tax"

The move to privatize liquor sales in Oregon comes with a wholesale "sales tax" to replace existing price markups, but the label is upsetting proponents. Privatization backers wanted to use the term "fees," but even with that language, consumers may be upset if prices rise like they did under Washington's privatization, said Mike Riley, a pollster in Portland. "A fair amount of people felt burned by the Washington measure, so that could be a bigger issue," Riley said.
