Manhattan losing traditional supermarkets

Faced with competition from upscale grocers including Whole Foods and Citarella, traditional supermarkets in New York City are shuttering stores or scrambling to revamp their product offerings. FreshDirect, the online delivery grocery that debuted in 2002, has also made a dent in the traditional grocery market, reporting $200 million in annual sales and 150,000 customers.
