Contracts with bottlers keep soda in schools

Soda vending machines dispensing sugared beverages remain in public schools, despite an outcry from health advocates about a mounting obesity crisis among young people -- and despite a pledge by Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Cadbury Schweppes in May 2006 to remove sugar-sweetened sodas from school vending machines by 2009. Schools have come to rely on the revenue that comes from exclusive deals with soda bottlers, and according to a report in The Washington Post, a majority of schools nationwide participate in such agreements.
