Enzyme might aid in development of better tuberculosis drugs

A team of U.S. and British researchers pinpointed an enzyme that can cause toxic production of a sugar called maltose 1-phosphate and lead to "suicidal self-poisoning" of cells in tuberculosis bacteria. The scientists are developing a tuberculosis drug that they hope can stimulate cell death in the bacteria.
