Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers have developed an energy-efficient system to remove salts and charged colloids from sea water based on the ion concentration polarization phenomenon. The research team, who report their findings in Nature Nanotechnology, believes the desalination technique they have devised could be turned into a portable, small-scale system that works with existing battery technology.
