Initial interviews should be done by phone to avoid getting sidetracked by issues that have nothing to do with a candidate's competencies, says Guy Kawasaki, a co-founder of Alltop and managing director of Garage Technology Ventures. "There should also be a checklist of questions that you ask every candidate on the phone instead," he says.
