Soldiers engineer coup in Mali

A cadre of soldiers took over Mali's TV stations and announced the removal of President Amadou Toumani Toure, just weeks before a planned election. The U.S. condemned the coup, and United Nations and African Union leaders called for calm. The coup leaders alleged that the current government had been too lax in combating an insurgency by Tuareg nomads living in the northern part of the West African nation.
