MHI exec defends design of Calif. plant's steam generators

Choices in the support-structure design of replacement steam generators for the San Onofre nuclear plant in California led to the facility's shutdown, said Frank Gillespie, a senior vice president at Mitsubishi Nuclear Energy Systems. The company said it sought to prevent one type of vibration, but another type of vibration was generated in the end, Gillespie said. Nuclear plants have never encountered such a vibration before, he added.
