An iconoclastic school celebrates its history

When Crow Island School in Winnetka, Ill., opened in 1940, it created a stir, due to its inventive architecture and progressive approach to education. Its building features L-shaped classrooms with large windows, an auditorium with form-fitting benches in graduated sizes and color-coded doors so that no one can get lost.
