Research provides no clear-cut guidance for universal preschool programs

Research still is inconclusive as to the long-term benefits of early education programs for children from disadvantaged backgrounds or their impact on children from wealthier families. Economics professor David Blau says that's because studies have focused on small, high-quality, high-cost programs, that probably can't be duplicated on a broad public scale.
