Increasingly, creatives are looking to up-and-coming bands to provide a musical backdrop for their ads, partly because it gives the marketer a whiff of indie cool, and partly because it's cheaper to license the work of unproven songwriters. For instance, Publicis Groupe agency Leo Burnett USA launched an "artists in residence" program that brings guest bands to the firm's Chicago office for visits with staffers.
