National Board Certified Teachers in Washington state receive a $5,000 bonus, but they say the real incentive is the improvements to teaching and learning that occur during the rigorous application process. One NBCT says before achieving certification it was the curriculum driving her lessons -- and now it is her students. "I need to sort of stop every once in a while and look at where have I gone, where am I going, how am I doing, is it working? If it's not working as well as I'd like, what can I do to improve things? The National Boards process was the clearest on that," said one teacher who will be going through the certification process.
