Senate votes for wide-scale NextGen by 2014

The Senate passed a sweeping reauthorization bill for the Federal Aviation Administration mandating installation of NextGen technology for air-traffic control at the busiest airports by 2014. Full, noncommercial implementation of NextGen would be required sometime after 2020, with a total cost to the FAA estimated at $22 billion. The price tag for cockpit avionics could reach an additional $20 billion, and the bill would authorize FAA grants to help aircraft owners defray the cost. Fuel taxes on general-aviation aircraft would increase more than 50%, to 36 cents per gallon.
