Startup begins producing gasoline substitute from sugar beets

A startup company working with Royal Dutch Shell has started producing a gasoline substitute from sugar beets at a 10,000-gallon-per-year pilot plant in Madison, Wis. Virent Energy Systems' "drop-in" fuel can be used safely in existing engines and pipelines, said CEO Lee Edwards. Virent's catalytic-conversion technology has gained the support of companies such as Cargill and Honda.
