A tsunami generator in Oxfordshire, U.K., imitates wave behaviors to improve understanding of tsumanis. The waves created by the generator wash over a model coastal slope to allow researchers to study the "draw-down phenomenon" in a laboratory. Researchers mimicked the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami at a scale of 1:75. The goal is to help better build structures to withstand damage and plan evacuation routes.
