Value of joint ventures among airlines is up for debate

The Department of Justice has said the global joint ventures among airlines fail its antitrust test, but the Department of Transportation says they meet its standards for antitrust immunity. Airlines, passengers, travel agents and other industry participants are generally for or against the alliances and the debate over their value continues. While the concept of joint ventures is not new, the effects of airline JVs still are emerging, with their long-term impacts on pricing and service unknown.
