Cap on state aid slashes NYC school construction from 56 to 26

Last year, the New York City Council approved construction of 56 schools through 2014, but a cap on state construction funds will reduce that number to 26. The council is expected to approve about $9.3 billion for construction. But matching funds provided by the state from 2005 to 2009 are no longer available, and the amount of state money is likely to be no more than $1 billion.
