At least five people were killed today after Syrian security forces fired upon protesters in the southern part of the country, where hundreds had taken to the streets for a fifth day of demonstrations against the rule of President Bashar al-Assad. UN Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillay appealed to Syria to curtail excessive force against protesters.
