Traders' profit taking sent Japanese stocks sliding Wednesday, but most other Asian-Pacific markets gained. Japan's Nikkei 225 dropped 0.8%, Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.2% and China's Shanghai Composite advanced 0.8%. South Korea's Kospi Composite and Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index lost 0.2%. New Zealand's NZX 50, Thailand's SET and Taiwan's Taiex added 0.3%. Singapore's Straits Times Index rose 0.5%, Indonesian shares climbed 0.6% and India's Sensex jumped 1.1%. Philippine shares and Malaysia's KLCI were unchanged.
