Drilling taxes in Pa. are some of lowest in U.S., report finds

A report by the Pennsylvania Independent Fiscal Office found that the state's taxes on natural gas drilling are among the lowest in the U.S. According to the report, the state only imposes an impact fee for gas wells and does not require a severance tax based on the commodity's market value or volume produced. The Marcellus Shale Coalition, however, said the report is inaccurate because it missed other components such as corporate taxes, adding, "Those who oppose shale development will inevitably seek to leverage this flawed analysis as a rallying cry, based purely on politics rather than objective facts."
