Study finds alarming dropout rate among California's black and Hispanic students

A just-released study of California graduation rates in 2002 indicates 71% of students completed high school, far below the 87% figure reported by the state Department of Education. Statewide, researchers found only 57% of African-Americans and 60% of Latinos earned a diploma that year, compared with 78% of whites and 84% of Asians.
