Lawmaker wants sweeping change to meat-safety processes

U.S. Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., is proposing an overhaul of the system that tracks contaminated meat. To reduce outbreaks of food-borne illnesses, including E. coli and salmonella, inspectors need to be able to trace meat all the way back to the slaughterhouse, where much of the contamination happens, Tester says.
