GOP slashes only half of "earmark" spending

Pet projects favored by members of Congress, called "earmarks," were the target of GOP lawmakers when they authored two short-term spending bills, cutting away $5.3 billion worth of funds for these initiatives. The balance of $4.8 billion may undergo further trimming, particularly allotments for defense and mass transit, in further funding legislation.
