Transplant guidelines address rabies risk

Transplant safety guidelines from the United Network for Organ Sharing could have helped prevent the transplantation of organs from a donor with rabies in 2011. Guidelines adopted in June call for extreme caution when collecting organs from people with what appears to be viral encephalitis. Transmission events involving rabies are rare, but four patients received organs from a donor with rabies two years ago. One of the four died in Maryland last month.
