Weight loss may help statin users avoid diabetes, study says

People taking statin medication to control cholesterol may help prevent new-onset diabetes mellitus by losing weight, Australian researchers reported in the American Journal of Cardiology. The study of about 7,600 patients who were taking the drug atorvastatin daily found that all participants gained about 2 pounds over one year, but those who developed diabetes later had gained an average of 3.5 pounds.
