Saliva protein discovery could lead to diagnostic tests

U.S. researchers hope to boost the development of saliva-based diagnostic tests that could spot conditions including cancer and diabetes, after they mapped the 1,116 proteins in human salivary glands. They found that some saliva proteins matched proteins linked to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases and some cancers, while most were part of signaling pathways, which are critical to the body's response to systemwide disorders.
