Study finds long emergency waits harmful for elderly

Waiting more than six hours in the emergency department increases by fourfold an elderly patient's chances of going from the hospital to a nursing home, rather than back to their own home, a new study found. The researchers said that elderly patients "boarded" for long periods may suffer declines in function and are more likely to become confused or disoriented.
