Teacher ties literature lessons to events in the Ukraine

Sixth-grade teacher Kevin Hodgson writes in this blog post about how he was able to use Dr. Seuss, contemporary literature and other resources to link lessons on history, politics, literature and current events. In the wake of the crisis in the Ukraine, he addressed the Cold War with his students by using "The Butter Battle Book" by Dr. Seuss. The book is about two nations, the Yooks and the Zooks, who "hate each other because one group butters their bread on the top and the other, on the bottom." From there, he explains, he was able to connect the lesson to the book "Three Cups of Tea."
