Albertson's digs into New England market with Sainsbury's deal

Albertson's has agreed to buy the American supermarket holdings of British supermarkets group J. Sainsbury for $2.475 billion in cash and lease assumptions. The acquisition of Sainsbury's JS USA Holdings, which operates as Shaw's and Star Markets, will help Albertson's "extend our national footprint into Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. ... " Sainsbury also said "increased competitiveness" could affect profits in the 2004-2005 fiscal years.
