The legal battle over whether Patricia Ann Spado, who was adopted by ex-partner Olive Watson, a granddaughter of Thomas Watson Sr., the founder of IBM, should be entitled to a grandchild's share of the family fortune, shows the "consequence" of not having adequate legal means for same-sex couples to ensure their rights, according to this New York Times editorial. In light of this case, The Times calls a Connecticut measure to convert civil unions to full marriage rights "the right move."
