Bay Bridge project nears completion seven months early

An expensive new double-decker approach structure for San Francisco's busy Bay Bridge should open by the middle of April, seven months ahead of schedule. The $500 million project has snarled traffic and slowed commutes for about two years. A Labor Day weekend construction blitz in 2006 added $25 million to the total tab, but officials say the cost will be largely offset by the earlier completion date.
