Still waiting for proposed crane safety rule

Although the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has regulations and policies that apply to safe crane operation, states do not need to follow them, and just 15 states mandate certification for crane operators. This is something Greg Knutson, who developed a crane safety program at Seattle-based Mortenson Construction, finds intolerable. He says that more than 320 construction workers died from 307 crane events between 1992 and 2006 and notes that workers are still waiting -- after seven years -- for the finalization of OSHA's Crane and Derrick Negotiated Rulemaking Advisory Committee proposed rule.
