San Diego-area retail centers pursue smaller tenants

Vacancies are rising at retail centers in the San Diego area. To combat the trend, owners are cutting deals with boutique and smaller stores that they ordinarily would not have. "Three years ago leasing agents would throw that independent guy out of their office. Now they are actively pursuing him. They are looking for live bodies," says James Dion, president of retail consulting firm Dionco.
